What is a bridge crane runway?

The runway system of an overhead crane is the structural support for your material handling solution. This includes the beams, columns, and rails that the crane utilizes to  perform the defined task or tasks. To complete this solution, bridge or girder end trucks run along the installed rail which is secured to the top of the runway beams. These beams are typically supported by one of the two main components within your structure as determined by the configuration of your crane. The top running  travelling crane beams are mounted to columns while the under running crane beams are supported from the structure of the roof.

When adding a new crane into your existing building or location, it is important to confirm if the existing columns can support the load required by the new crane and runway or if new columns will be required to support the system. If there is a need for new columns, they can be supplied as either tied back columns which are connected to the current structure of the building or can be entirely free-standing columns separate from the structure of the building. Tied back columns are an effective, practical and safe method of providing added lateral support to an overhead crane runway.

What to consider when you’re designing a runway system that will utilize the current columns in a building?

  • Note the center to center down shop spacing between the building columns. This will determine the span of the crane, as well as the hook approach to the side walls of the building.

  • Conductor systems are fastened to the runway beams and they supply the main power to the crane

Since the crane is moving up and down the building, there must be an efficient way to transfer power from the building to the crane. This is accomplished by one of the following:

  • standard conductor bars which utilize conductive shoes that slide on galvanized or copper bars

  • enclosed conductor bar systems that help to prevent inadvertent contact with the live bars

  • flat cable festoon systems

The team at Munck can guide you as :

  • you begin looking ahead to building a new runway solution

  • you begin the process of verifying the integrity of your current runway system for a planned expansion

  • you work through your requirements for another crane to your existing runway

The professionals at Munck Cranes can also assist you with planning for a new facility by providing comprehensive reports and an in-depth analysis of your current or proposed runway system.
